Tides turn for Tommy James

Topping the Billboard Hot 100 on this day in 1966, is ‘Hanky Panky’ by Tommy James and the Shondells.

Only by chance, when a DJ happened to pick up a high school garage band’s album out of the bargain bin and play it on the air, did Tommy James get the chance to be the star he had dreamt of becoming. By the time their music was noticed his original group had moved on. He recruited new members and they we’re on their way.
